If you’ve ever had to search IRS.gov for a specific piece of information, you know it’s not the easiest to navigate. But one small change in how you search can save you tons of time.
Because of the vast amount of information on IRS’ site, the most effective way to search is with topic keywords. For example, if you’re looking for information on e-filing returns, your best bet is to search under “EFTPS” instead of “e-filing” or “filing W-2s.”
Once you get to the main page of EFTPS links, you can scroll through them to find one that addresses your specific question.
Below is a list of recommended keywords IRS has put together to ease searching the site. Listed first is the general topic, followed by the keyword you should use in bold:
- Small Business/Self-Employed One-Stop Resource — Smallbiz
- Business-Related News — Business-related News
- Business Taxes — Business Taxes
- Employer ID Numbers — EIN
- Business Expenses — Business Expenses
- Employment Taxes — Employment Taxes for Businesses
- Tax Information for Specific Industries or Professions — Industries/Professions
- Electronic Federal Tax Payment System — EFTPS
- E-file for Small Business — E-file for Business
- Common Errors — Tax Gap
- State Resources for Small Businesses — State Links
- Tax Forms and Publications — Forms
