I tell my boss when I would like to work on different projects and I always volunteer to pitch in when he or others in my department are lagging. It scores points and changes the pace. Even if it gets me a little behind on my regular boring work, it creates a challenge getting caught up.

I actually let my boss know when I'm not at the top of my game. He understands, because he goes through the same thing himself. And I think that he eases up on the pressure during these times.
